How To Become Your Own Best Stylist

Having a capsule size wardrobe does not mean you have a limited number of outfits. Most people are surprised with how many outfits they can create with a small number of clothing items – whether that be 10, 20 or 30 pieces.

The whole idea behind having a functional minimalist sized wardrobe is planning. Having tried and tested outfits at the ready is what makes a minimalist wardrobe so appealing. It also makes for a very fun day of being creative and trying on clothes!

So are you ready to have an awesome day of dressing up?

First things first, you need to have a full length mirror, a camera or smartphone and, well, trying on clothes is best done with an awesome playlist of songs, so make sure you have that at the ready as well!

Here’s a guide on how to become your own best stylist!

1. Know what you have

Before you start, go through your whole wardrobe and make sure you have a good idea of what you have. This will make it easier to create your outfits. You could even lay everything out on your bed. Don’t forget the clothes you potentially have in the washing basket!

2. Start with one item, and build from there

Start with one main item and build up your outfit from there – it makes the whole process easier! Begin by creating your classic outfit choices, and then start to experiment with pairing up items you wouldn’t ordinarily to see if they work. If you’ve struck gold, don’t forget to take a picture of it!

3. Use the internet to help

There are plenty of ideas for creating outfits on the internet. If you have one main item and are not sure what to style with it, google it! E.g. you have an amazing black pencil skirt – type into google “how to best wear a black pencil skirt”. You’ll be shocked at how much style inspiration you will get! Pinterest is great for this. Check out my minimalist style section for more inspiration as well.

4. Style three different looks with one main piece

If you have one main piece, challenge yourself to create three outfits with that one item – a casual outfit, a work outfit and a night outfit. Don’t forget about accessories – changing shoes are usually the key to changing the feel of an outfit!

5. Keep a style file

This is where the camera or smartphone comes into play. It may sound silly, but more times than not, you don’t remember the awesome outfits you create. So every time you create a new outfit, snap a picture of it. You could create a folder on your phone for your pictures of even make a physical scrapbook. Whatever works for you!

Have fun!
