Why You Should Buy An Investment Bag (And How)

I am a firm believer in quality over quantity. And I apply this belief to all aspects of life, but especially when it comes to fashion.
For those of you not sure, an investment bag is one that costs £500 ($1000) or more and comes from a fashion house that creates classically designed, and high quality bags.
My very first investment bag was a Mulberry Bayswater in soft black leather. I wore it everyday for two and a half years and back then, it cost me £600. The only reason I’m not wearing it now is because I recently lost my luggage traveling from Berlin to London 🙁 A story for another day!
However, as a consolation (and with a birthday coming up), I’ve splurged on a beautifully designed Prada hand bag. I had seen this bag in a designer bag store near my house for a few weeks and had ooo’d and ahhh’d over it. It seemed like fate when the store had a sale and a rather sizable chunk of money was deducted from the bag.
Here are my reasons for why you should buy an investment bag:
1. It’s cheaper in the long run (cost per wear)
Let’s say you buy a bag for £800 and you wear that bag every day for a year, the cost per wear is £2.20. That’s the price of a coffee or small snack…
2. It will pass through the generations
Realistically, you will be holding onto this bag for the rest of your life, and one day be handing it down to a (very) grateful daughter or other family member.
3. It will dress up ANY outfit
Except for track pants. I really am a firm believer in keeping the track pants only for the confines of your own home!!
4. They (pretty much) hold their value
If you decide (reluctantly) to sell your investment bag after a period of time, depending of the brand and design of bag, you will be able to sell it for up to 90% of the original value. Of course this depends on how well you have taken care of the bag over the years, but after spending so much on it in the first place, why would you not take care of it?
Now that we’re done with the why, here is how to buy an investment bag:
1. Choose a bag of high quality
When looking for the perfect investment bag, the quality should be your number one priority. You will be carrying this bag around for years and so the bag must be able to last the distance. Chanel, Mulberry, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Chloe, Fendi and Celine are just some of the brands that make quality hand bags.
2. Leather is always the way
Leather ages beautifully and will ensure your bag holds its shape through time.
3. Choose a neutral colour
You want your investment bag to be able to match with everything so stick to either black or nude when choosing a colour for your bag.
4. Make sure the hardware matches your jewellery
Since I wear gold jewellery, my bag has gold hardware
5. Avoid large logos
It is my personal opinion that the logo of the bag should not be so obvious that you can see straight away where the bag is from, from the multiple of times it is written on the bag. Subtlety is always much more chic. You should be able to tell what the brand is from the design of the bag, not the logo.
Do you have an investment bag? Do you think it was a good investment?
