A couple of weeks ago, the boyfriend and I decided to make a spontaneous trip to Amsterdam on the way back from one of his gigs in Belgium (another post on that later!). We literally only had 24 hours there until we had to take the bus back to Berlin.

I feel that sometimes only having 24 hours to see a city can be great as you have to fit all the highlights in such a short space of time, granting you a good view of the city as a whole.

The key to 24 hours trips however is to plan, plan, plan! You don’t want to get there and then have the thought “okay, so what shall we do?”. With that in mind, we researched the highlights of Amsterdam, and made our own little itinerary! If you have 24 hours in Amsterdam, this is what you should do:

9am

You might be served breakfast in your hotel, but if not, you should have breakfast amongst the beautiful inter-city canals in the Jordaan. The Jordaan is a beautiful area of town that deserves to be walked in after breakfast!

11am

Hire a bike and explore the city! Riding a bike is definitely one of the easiest and quickest ways of seeing Amsterdam. MacBike is conveniently located right outside of Amsterdam Central Station!

1pm

Ride your bike to Vondelpark, a beautiful park just outside of the main city. Park your bike and walk, or take a ride around this stunning green oasis! While you’re here, have lunch in one of the many cafe’s and restaurants adorning the park.

3pm

Choose a museum or galleries to spend a few hours in and soak up some culture! We decided to visit The Anne Frank House, but there are many others to choose from including the Van Gogh Museum.

5pm

Return your bike and start exploring the area around the Amsterdam Central by foot, there are many cute streets and shops around the area that are worth walking through! Find a place to have some dinner. There are many different cuisines around Amsterdam so you’re bound to find something that you like – but its well worth trying the local fries (or frites as they call them).

7pm

Cocktail hour! Head to one of the rooftop bars in the city. The Sky Lounge at Doubletree by Hilton is conveniently located a just a few hundred metres from Amsterdam Central and has an AMAZING view of the city! A definite must for photographers.

10pm

If you’re still going strong at this point, hit the town! After the long day we had, the boyfriend and I were ready for bed (sad, I know) however, there are many events in town during summer. Head to whatsupwithamsterdam for inspiration.

Have you been to Amsterdam? What’s your favourite part?

Well, after reading your blog and seeing your pictures I decided I should return to Amsterdam and give it a second chance. Our one and only day there was cold, dank and miserable and I couldn’t wait to get away from there!
