This past weekend I was lucky enough to be taken, by my lovely boyfriend, to Bergen in Norway for my birthday! Best weekend ever. This beautiful town is the second largest in Norway (population of just over 265 000 people) and is surrounded by mountains and fjords, making it both a beautiful place to visit not only for city life, but for the beautiful nature that surrounds it as well.

We were only in Bergen for the weekend, however, we managed to cram A LOT of sighting in. Here are the top 5 activities to do in Bergen:

1. Take a boat cruise through the fjords.

The fjords are Norway’s pride and joy. Created by glacial erosion, they are narrow inlets with steep cliffs and hills on either side. There are multiple cruises and tours you can take to visit them, some lasting days (usually in the summer only) and others just for a few hours. Since daylight is a rarity this time of year (7 hours a day), we had a 3 hours cruise of the fjords closest to Bergen, but it was enough to experience the beauty of them.

2. Hike on Mount Ulriken

Ulriken is the highest of the seven mountains that surrounds Bergen, and as such has an amazing view! You can either walk to the top of take a cable car (we did the latter) and then pick one of the many hiking trails to explore. The views are spectacular but remember to dress warmly if hiking in autumn or winter as the temperature at the top of the mountain is usually 5 degrees lower than in the town. On our trip, it was -5 degrees!

3. Stroll along the harbour front

While walking around town, a highlight was viewing the beautiful wooden houses along the harbour, as well as doing some stationary shopping at the cutest design store called Ting! Unfortunately they don’t do international shipping, but if you go to Norway, check them out!

4. Visit the famous Bergen Fish Market

The ultimate in seafood shopping, Bergen Fish Market is hard to beat for its atmosphere alone. As well as fish, there are vegetable, fruit and hand craft stores as well.

5. Enjoy the local cuisine

Bergen is famous for its seafood cuisine. Be sure to taste one of the fish dishes that is bound to be on the menu of any restaurant you happen to visit! We had an amazing dinner at Zupperia on the Saturday night.

Have you been to Bergen? What was your favourite part?

xx
