Minimalism is a concept that is slowly on the rise. Many have heard of it, and how it can be applied to various areas of life, but not many actually take the plunge into the world of minimalism and truly live parts of their lives in a minimalist style.
Of course minimalism is not a new concept; the earliest evidence is the minimalist arts movement of the 1960’s. It can also be found in music, fashion, architecture and literature. However the concept of lifestyle minimalism, or to use another term, ‘simplistic living’, is something that is only now in the last 20 years really having its time in the sun.
Lifestyle minimalism can be applied to various aspects of your day-to-day life, whether that be within your surroundings or be it the size of your wardrobe. Many understand how to achieve a minimalist lifestyle, but not many really understand the benefits of making such a change.
So, what are the benefits? Well here are a few:
1. You save money
By saving money on “things”, you are able to invest that money into experiences. What is it that you take photos of and show your friends mostly? It’s your experiences. That great trip overseas or that amazing meal you had with your partner. When you look back at the fun times, it’s not the “things” that brought you happiness; it’s the experiences you had with those you love. See where I’m getting at?
You’ll also learn to shop better and smarter. When you do need that new winter coat, or new pair of shoes, you will invest in something that is going to last years, not just a few months. A 100% wool coat is going to last you a lot longer than the 100% polyester one. Think of cost-per-wear when purchasing everything.
You will also learn to invest in the items that already exist in your wardrobe. Thus saving you going out and buying more of the same!
2. You save time
All that time browsing the internet for purchases, walking around the shopping centre for hours on end just looking for the next thing to have – all that time is now yours to do whatever you want. Invest it into something you value! Perhaps you’ve wanted to learn to ride a horse (ahem…) or swim with dolphins. You’ve got time, and you’ve got money now.
3. You create a better sense of personal style
Since creating a minimalist wardrobe means bringing down the amount of items you have in your wardrobe, you will naturally find that you will gravitate towards your favourite pieces. This is the building blocks for your new personal, or signature, style.
Creating your own personal style is the perfect way of achieving a functional wardrobe. Bringing your style down to your basics will help you make it easier to dress every day. Which is the whole point of having a minimalist wardrobe. Once you have found a look you really love, you can then find ways of developing that look.
4. Less stress
“Those who adopt minimalist principles in their wardrobe choices are discovering more productivity, less stress, less distraction, less expense and more peace.” – Becoming Minimalist Blog
Isn’t less stress what we all want to achieve within our lives? The fact is this: simplicity equals less stress. By having a simplified wardrobe, you are going to have less stress in your life; less stress getting ready in the morning, which means more time doing more meaningful tasks, and less stress because you already know what items work well together and look amazing on you.
